Greece: Visit to Poros

Submitted by Hannah Kirby on the 2022 spring semester program in Athens, Greece…

My second week abroad was amazing! Classes at the American College of Greece have begun and for once I am excited to learn. The Professors are enthusiastic, caring, and it’s obvious that they are passionate about the topics they teach. I have found the classes to be more discussion based rather than memorization of the PowerPoints presented. I have genuinely enjoyed this format. I feel as though my opinions and questions are being heard, and that my understanding of the material is firm. I was dreading having to complete a semester of courses during my grand adventure around Greece, but I know now that my classes are only going to enhance my experience.

This week we were also able to visit our first Greek island, Poros. This island was the picture that pops into your head when you think of Greece in physical form. It was gorgeous, peaceful, and everything a Mamma Mia fan dreams of. I am still in awe that I am lucky enough to be allowed to live here for a few months.

Even in the winter season, the town was bustling — not with tourists, with locals. We were able to walk around the island and see the way people live on a daily basis, and I was jealous. I know, I know ‘the grass is always greener,’ but trust me these people are living in paradise. The Greek lifestyle is slower – more relaxed – and a part of me just wanted to stay on Poros forever and live a stress-free life. I know when I go home, I will think back on this experience and give myself the patience I need in my own studies and work – just as the Greeks do.

A small beach we found as we walked through Poros. We spent time searching for seashells and sea glass.
A small alley that leads into the center of the island. All the shops were closed since it was the off-season.
A view of Poro’s coast from across the canal. The boat pictured is a taxi that takes patrons across the canal for one euro.
