England: Canal Life in London

Submitted by Morgan Brownell on the 2018 summer session program in London, England sponsored by the Department of Art and Design…

The end of our study abroad program ended with a morning on the canal. We got the opportunity to travel on the water and explore the area, starting at Camden Market all the way to the other side and back again. This experience stood out to me because it showed us a completely different living situation than our own. There are so many more houseboats than I thought there were in London and everyone who lives in one has their own way of living and their own reason for choosing to live on the water. It really showed me that there isn’t one specific way to live your life, and that there are no rules when it comes to defining your own home. Though I prefer to live on a more stable surface, I couldn’t help, but wonder what it would be like to live on a tiny house that I can steer down the canal.
