England: British View of U.S. Politics

Submitted by Morgan Brownell on the 2018 summer session program in London, England sponsored by the Department of Art and Design…

This week, we visited the Design Museum to see Hope to Nope. I was drawn to a lot of the exhibit because it focuses on politics in the United States. It is very interesting to see how England portrays what is going on in different countries. It is also very interesting to see how UK citizens respond to them.

While I was sitting in the documentary section of the exhibit, a young boy wandered over and joined me on a bench in front of screens. He watched for a while before his Mom and sister joined us. I could hear them speaking in French and they got excited when the Eiffel Tower popped onto the screen. Even though I couldn’t exactly understand what they were saying, I noticed their serious tones during the videos about Catalonia and their giggles during the Women’s March when the Trump signs flashed before us. I couldn’t help, but feel some pride at the visuals of the March. Having been there, and having felt the energy of everyone there, I could feel that hope again.
