Washington, D.C.: Meeting the President of Honduras

Submitted by Rony Baltazar-Lopez on the 2017 spring semester program in Washington, D.C. …

The highlight of my week here in Washington, D.C. was meeting the President of Honduras, Mr. Juan Orlando Hernandez. Senator Tom Carper has met with him previous times as Senator Carper has pushed for relations with Central American countries and the State of Delaware. Only one intern was allowed to sit in the meeting that consisted of President Hernandez and his staff and Senator Carper and his staff. The meeting lasted about 50 minutes and I was very intrigued by the fact that as casual as this meeting was for both politicians, I was very excited that I got to meet someone with such prestige. I am a Latino—my mother is Mexican and my father is Guatemalan so being able to meet a president of a neighboring country to my roots was an honor.
