A heavy debate has been circulating over the years as to whether or not this time period is the golden age of journalism. Henry Blodget, writer for Business Insider, believes that “journalism is now in better shape than it has ever been.” Blodget credits social networks, digital news organizations, smart phones, and other technological advances for helping journalism branch out by providing more outlets of information and contributing to a new method reporting. Tom Engelhardt, author of The Nation’s “Are We Living in the Golden Age of Journalism,” takes a more cynical approach in his article, but agrees with Blodget. Engelhardt confesses that he does not own a Kindle or use Twitter. He feels that this period is a “journalistic universe from hell, a genuine nightmare.” However, Engelhardt admits that now is “a time when all the words you could ever have needed were freely offered up for you to curate as you wish” and this is due to the amenities the Internet has to offer. Although print news is slowly becoming obsolete, there is still a promise for professional journalism to carry on through other means and outlets.
