Coleman Farm Project 2019
PROJECT OVERVIEW
This project extends the historical anthropological research initiative on colonialism and its legacy in the lower Delaware Valley. The project area is of special interest as a nexus of Delaware-Chesapeake relations and New Castle-Appoquinimink relations, and as (or near) a possible Minquas trading post. We seek evidence of 1) changes in the cultural landscape over the generations since first settlement on the site, 2) relations among Lenape, Minquas, Africans, and European colonists, 3) material life and agriculture of the Swedish, Dutch, and Maryland settlers, 4) overland trade in tobacco, labor, and commodities.
PROJECT GOALS
- Identify and evaluate archaeological remains associated with European conquest and colonial encounters
- Initiate UD-ASD collaboration in public archaeology and cultural heritage programming
HISTORICAL RESEARCH
