Holy Trinity (Old Swedes’) Church
ARCHAEOLOGY at HOLY TRINITY (OLD SWEDES’) CHURCH and BURIAL GROUND (Spring 2015)
Our semester’s project initiates historical archaeological research at Holy Trinity (Old Swedes’) Church and Burial Ground in Wilmington, DE. Our research will focus on areas around the church itself prior to repairs and installation of underground drainage.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
This project extends the historical anthropological research initiative on early colonialism and its legacy in the lower Delaware Valley. Holy Trinity (Old Swede’s) Church and Burial Ground grew out of the early Swedish colonial settlement of Fort Christina at the Rocks on the Christina River adjoining the church property. The Church remains an active site of Episcopal worship today, and is jointly administered by the non-profit Old Swedes Foundation. The churchyard forms the focus of this semester’s research.
PROJECT GOALS
- Identify and Evaluate archaeological remains potentially impacted by building repair and drainage projects
- Initiate public archaeology and cultural heritage programming in collaboration with Old Swedes Foundation and other stakeholder groups
