Methanol is a potential fuel and a starting material in chemical industry. The aim of this work is to synthesize methanol from CO2 through hydrogenation over active and cost-effective catalysts. This work is of interest because this reaction is also considered an effective way for CO2 utilization from the combustion of fossil fuels.

I am looking at the isomerization of glucose to fructose over titanium containing zeolites. This reaction is of interest because compared to glucose, fructose is easier to convert to hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a precursor for fuels and chemicals.

I’m working on catalytic hydrodeoxygenation converting furfural to 2-methylfuran. Molybdenum Carbides show better prospect as selective HDO catalysts than that of previous precious metals. I’m now investigating how to choose the proper support to synthesize the catalyst that can lower the costs and get a higher yield of the HDO reaction.

Zeolites are an important class of materials utilized in industry, mainly for catalysis and adsorption.  The current goal of my project is to choose a zeolite catalyst best suited for the high pressure cracking of light hydrocarbons and then experimentally determine the rate constants for the various reactions involved.
