After working in the construction industry and for the National Park Service, Walt Babich decided to go to night school to earn a bachelor’s degree. Inspired by the teaching methods of the late Dr. Juan Espadas, he decided to change his major to Spanish, and then to earn a master’s degree at West Chester University in Pennsylvania, where he began teaching ESL as a graduate student. He went on to become manager of that program and to teach ESL at several community colleges and evening programs.
Mr. Babich started teaching at ELI in 1999, where he has taught a variety of classes and has served in many different administrative capacities. Mr. Babich usually teaches two courses which he developed: English Through Stories and English through the Media. Mr. Babich has presented many workshops focusing on practical instruction at conferences organized by PennTESOL-East, NJTESOL/NJBE, Maryland Association for Adult, Community and Continuing Education, Maryland TESOL and WATESOL.
