Julie Lopez has been teaching English since 2002. She began her career teaching English Majors at Hue College of Foreign Languages in Vietnam, where she stayed for 4.5 years. During her time overseas, she earned a Master’s degree in TEFL from Azusa Pacific University in California. In 2006, she moved back to the U.S. and began teaching at the University of Delaware ELI.
At the ELI, Mrs. Lopez has played a number of roles: Instructor, Bridge Program Coordinator, Videographer, and now AT Instructional Assistant Coordinator. Mrs. Lopez has taught classes from level II through level VI, but specialized in upper level English for Academic Purposes classes. In 2009, she created the popular level VI Listening/Speaking class: English through Film: Viewing and Producing. She also co-authored the Reading/Writing EAPVI coursebook used for many years and presented numerous times at International TESOL conferences.
In addition to presenting at conferences, she has been a special group coordinator for the Hong Kong Institute of Education (fall of 2008 and 2009), a member of the Professional Development Task Force, and the go-to person that welcomes and orients new ELI faculty.
Her role as the Bridge Program Coordinator starting in 2012 reshaped the Bridge Program to help international students transition more successfully to the UD. That role has now become the Instructional Assistant Coordinator in ELI’s Academic Transitions pathways program.
