Professor Jo Gielow has been a member of the ELI faculty since 1987. She is an alumna of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in linguistics in May 1985 and a master’s degree in TESL in December 1986, both with honors. She was awarded the Linguistics Distinguished Achievement Award in May 1985, and has been a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi since May 1986. Professor Gielow has taught at all levels and content areas of ESL, including a number of years with ELI’s Limited English Proficiency programs for elementary and secondary school students. She is currently teaching Listening/Speaking II and Reading/Writing III at ELI, and is a co-teacher in the Advanced ESL Methodology course in the Education Department. In addition to teaching, Professor Gielow has been a frequent presenter at TESOL on topics relating to developing and implementing independent study centers for ESL students.
