After enjoying study abroad experiences in Costa Rica and Spain, Mikie Sarmiento earned her B.A. in Spanish literature from the University of Delaware in 2000. After graduation, she began teaching elementary school English language learners in the Brandywine School District in Wilmington, DE. After teaching for three years, Mikie decided to return to UD to pursue her master’s degree. During graduate school, Mikie began tutoring at the ELI and discovered that she had a passion for teaching adults as well as children. She has been teaching classes at the ELI since 2006. Mikie has taught nearly all levels at the ELI but most frequently teaches Basic and Level 1, where she enjoys welcoming students to Newark and helping them adjust to life in the United States.
