Learn the Language."From the arcade, to the living room, to the giant e-sports arena, the evolution of video games has spiraled upwards in an impressive way since the days of Pong, and the ELI is taking part in the action with its newest class: “E-Gaming: Play the Game. Learn the Language.

A listening/speaking course for level 6 students, “E-Gaming: Play the Game. Learn the Language” is not your average course. In this class that is built around gaming, students can expect to spend their time at the gaming console, rather than gripping a pen a paper, as they learn the history, culture, and idioms of gaming.

As course instructor, Brandon Jackson, explains:

“I have created this course with students like you especially in mind. This will not be a regular class with piles of worksheets and hours of Ted Talks. We will be using our phones and other devices to collaborate online. We will learn English by watching real videos of our favorite games and streamers, and you will be graded on how well you use English to play games in the ELI’s Elite Esports Lounge.”

One of the goals of this class is to develop an e-gaming team that can compete in UD’s new Esports Arena, and Jackson wants to be sure that the students who take this class not only play like real gamers, but they can talk like them too.

“In this course, you will practice playing your favorite esports games and improving conversation skills with American idioms and expressions,” he explained. “Ultimately, our goal is to create an official UD esports team representing the ELI at the university’s new Esports Arena. By then, you will be prepared to compete and ‘trash talk’ with native English-speaking students because you will have had in-depth discussions about gaming history and culture. As a result, your vocabulary will expand greatly.”
