Trips and activities | Session VI 2018

At the UD English Language Institute, we often tell our students that half of what they learn while in Delaware will be from their experiences outside of the classroom.

It is important to get involved, meet students from other countries and learn about American culture. This is why we offer trips and activities each session to ELI students!

There are also many activities on campus that ELI students are permitted to attend. Be sure to check our Facebook page or Instagram @udel_eli to see what is happening each week!

Meet-n-Greet: Hen Zone Hangout

Friday, July 6 | 1-4 p.m. | Perkins Student Center Hen Zone

Get to know your classmates! Join us in the Hen Zone at the Perkins Student Center for an afternoon of fun!

The Hen Zone features video games, foosball, billiards tables, air hockey and more!

Bus trip to Baltimore Inner Harbor

Saturday, July 14 | Sign up at the ELI Cashier’s Window at 189 W. Main Street | Cost $30 per person

Baltimore is known as Charm City, and it’s not hard to see why! The Baltimore Inner Harbor has so much to see, to do and to eat!

There are also historic sites to see, like Fort McHenry, historic ships like the USS Constellation and so much more.

Buy your tickets at the ELI Cashier’s Office at 189 W. Main Street, Monday – Friday, 1-4 p.m. You should buy your ticket early, as there is limited seating available for this trip. The cost is $30 per person.

Pool Party at the UD outdoor pool

Friday, July 20 | 2:30-6 p.m.

Cool off at the UD outdoor pool!

Join your classmates for a fun afternoon of swimming and sun.

Located behind the Gold Ice Arena, the outdoor pool is the largest in the state. Since it is a fifty meter pool equipped with pool slides, there is always plenty of room on the hottest of summer days. The pool is heated so you do not have to worry about those chilly days!

The University of Delaware Outdoor Pool has locker room facilities, including a baby changing station in the women’s room.

There are chaise lounges and sand chairs on the pool deck, along with picnic tables and two 15-foot awnings.

Bus trip to New York City

Saturday, July 21 | Sign up at the ELI Cashier’s Window at 189 W. Main Street | Cost $35 per person

Here is your chance to see New York City!

Ride the bus to the Big Apple. Spend the day seeing the sights, shopping, eating and more!

Buy your tickets at the ELI Cashier’s Office at 189 W. Main Street, Monday – Friday, 1-4 p.m. You should buy your ticket early, as there is limited seating available for this trip. The cost is $35 per person.

Bus Schedule:

Departs 318 S. College Ave. at 7 a.m. | Returns to 318 S. College Ave. at 10 p.m.

Free trip to Rehoboth Beach

Saturday, August 4 | Sign up at the ELI Cashier’s Window at 189 W. Main Street by July 30

Located on the Delaware Shores, the Rehoboth Beach & Dewey Beach Resort Area is known for its award-winning boardwalk, awesome hotels, specialty stores, amusements, beautiful homes, tax-free shopping and some of the finest restaurants anywhere.

Visitors enjoy exploring 30 miles of unspoiled Delaware coastline, and many passive park areas. Nature based activities include State Parks, kayaking, nature cruises, ferry rides, walking trails, surfing, skimboarding, paddleboarding, sailing or exploring the water’s edge.

Neighboring Dewey Beach is just a short walk from Rehoboth Beach and sits between the Atlantic Ocean and Rehoboth Bay. Dewey offers beach sports and activities as well as great restaurants, majestic sunsets, live music, dancing, and nightlife that is world famous… The Resort’s Gateway (Highway One), offers a “mile of style” at the famous Tanger Outlet Center as well as additional restaurants, bars, shops, rides, and attractions.



*This trip is free for ELI students only. ELI students pay a $20 cash deposit when they sign up, which they will get back the day of the trip as long as they have their student ID and yellow reservation slip with them. All others who wish to go on the trip must pay $20 (non-refundable)  to buy a seat on the bus.

The deadline to sign up for this trip is Monday, July 30.

Trip schedule

  • 6:30 a.m. One bus will pick up students at The Retreat (500 Hamlet Way)
  • 7 a.m. All buses depart from 318 S. College Ave.

Read With Me

New! Read With Me is a personalized, one-on-one reading program for ELI students at all levels.

No appointment is necessary! Just come to the SALC to practice and enjoy reading. Bring your own book or we will help you select a book at your level.

The SALC is open:
Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

ELI Reading Challenge

Whoever reads the most books in one session will win a Starbucks gift card! This activity is happening throughout the session. How to participate:

  • Read any book that you want.
    • Note: The book must be appropriate for your reading/writing level. If you are not sure about whether your book qualifies, ask an SALC staff member.
  • Go to the SALC (108 East Main Street) and pick up a Reading Challenge Form.
  • Complete the form (answer a few questions on it) and then submit it to the SALC staff.
  • Repeat!

ELI Book Club

Join the ELI Book Club - Many open books photo by Rey Seven

Join the ELI Book Club this session and improve your English reading skills, vocabulary and fluency! With the ELI book club, you’ll get to read a new book every session, meet new people and learn more about American literature.

Participants meet at the SALC (108 E. Main St.) every week. This club is open to students at R/W Level III and above. Sign up at the SALC at 108 East Main St. or click here.

ELI Guitar Club

This is a club for all levels of physical activity, not just running! Your current fitness level does not matter. If you are interested in getting in shape, losing weight or increasing your athletic ability, you’ll want to join our club!

To start bringing some exercise into your life, join us on Mondays and Thursdays at 2:15 p.m. in the Student Lounge at 108 East Main Street.
