Brazilian Teachers at the ELI

By Sarah Petersen

The ELI is proud to welcome 32 Brazilian teachers to the University of Delaware for a six-week intensive English language and teacher training program.

UD is one of 18 universities in the nation that was selected for the Brazil English Teachers Program, which will bring more than 1,000 teachers per year to the U.S. for programs of this nature during the next three years.

The program, sponsored by the Institute of International Education, aimed at improving the teachers’ English language proficiency as well as their teaching skills. Their program includes listening/speaking and reading/writing classes, teacher training workshops with topics ranging from reading strategies to podcasting, and “service learning”: opportunities to learn about American culture through service to the community.

The teachers have visited the Newark Senior Center, Boys and Girls Clubs, and a university communications course to share their culture with young and old.

Weekends have been as chock full as weekdays, including trips to Philadelphia, Washington, New York, and the Amish region of Lancaster County.

The participants wouldn’t complete a description of their experiences without mentioning the precious time they’ve spent with American host families, who have opened their homes and hearts to their Brazilian guests and offered them an authentic slice of American life.
