Who’s Writing This?

As you may or may not know, my name is Daniel Carr, I’m a junior English major (Interactive Media minor) at the University of Delaware and I’m the voice behind “Digging Up Old Mix CDs: A College Student Looking Back On The Music of the 2000s“.  In my personal life, I am a singer/songwriter and my main instrument is the piano. I’ve played in various ensembles, had the opportunity to perform in places like Carnegie Hall in NYC, and have songs that have professionally produced and released, and also officially copyrighted by the US Copyright Office. My fascination with popular culture, combined with my love of all music, led me to writing this blog.

Admittedly, it took me some time to choose the right ‘angle’ to write from. I thought about the power of nostalgia, and what I can accomplish here. That is — why is it important?

What I came up with satisfied and enlightened me, as I hope it will for you too. When we retrospectively look into our childhood, there is a tint in the way we view not only our personal lives but the cultural events of the time. This reaches to music. I don’t aim to destroy that nostalgic tint, but rather look at it and its variable effect. Think about what you listened to in your teenage years — I can almost immediately assume you not only thought of songs but also people, places, and events.

Together we are going to dig up my old mix CDs and take a trip down this (not so distant) memory lane. I’m sure you’ll pick up some of your own memories along the way.
