Introduction to Group Therapy by Darius Campinha-Bacote

Group counseling gathers 5 – 10 students to meet each week for 1 ½ hours.  These sessions are led by trained group counselors who work in the Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD).

This form of counseling can offer unique opportunities to learn about yourself.  Group provides a place to

  • share your concerns
  • try out new behaviors
  • learn more about how you interact with others.

Group participants are encouraged to share their reactions to other group members, the leaders, and the material discussed in the group meeting.  The group leaders help to create a safe environment and to encourage group members’ interaction.  Creating this safe atmosphere includes protecting members’ privacy and facilitating open, honest, and respectful discussions.

CCSD offers two different types of groups:  process-oriented and structured groups. We also offer some support groups depending upon the need.

If you are interested in joining a counseling group, check our current group listing or call CCSD at 302-831-2141 for the current group meeting schedule.  All potential group members must schedule a preliminary meeting with the group leaders, which provides an opportunity to get acquainted, ask questions, and discuss expectations.
