In collaboration with the Institute of Global Studies, Dr. Xiaoyan Xiao, Co-Director of the Confucius Institute will present a lecture about her research on Chinese sign language and the Deaf community in China.

In this talk, Dr. Xiao, an expert in interpretation from Xiamen University, will share how her passion for language led her to research the status of the more than 20 million Deaf people in China. She’ll put into context the history of signed languages and will brief the audience on family life, education, and career opportunities for the Chinese Deaf community today. She will also discuss how her Fulbright residency at Gallaudet University led her to understand current problems, prospects, and the path forward for the largest Deaf community in the world.
