The CBI Grant is publicly funded by the National Institute of Health, through the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.  Thus, all articles/papers, including their data, tables, figures and supplemental information, must be made publicly available to ensure compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy.

To that end, all papers published in collaboration with a CBI Student need to apply for, and receive, a PMCID number from the National Institute of Health’s Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS.) Although some publishers will help you obtain the PMCID by loading the article/paper into the NIHMS for you, most do not.  Consequently, you, as an author or PI, must upload all the information into NIHMS yourself by a process known as Method C. To help you obtain a PMCID number through Method C, we have written some helpful directions below:

  1. Log onto the NIHMS via www.nihms.nih.gov/db/sub.cgi?
  2. As a researcher, you should be able to log in on the first line, using either your NIH log in or your eRA Commons login.
  3. You will be brought to the Manuscript Submission page. Click on the large, blue button (towards the left top corner of the page) titled “Submit New Manuscript.”
  4. If the paper has already received a Pub Med citation, you can proceed to Option 2. Click on the words “Search for Citation in Pub Med.” A box will open below those words.  Type the eight-digit PubMed citation into that box and click on the blue “Search” button to the right on the number you just typed.
  5. Your publication title should show in a box beneath the word “Publications.”
  6. If it does not, or Option 2 is not working for you, use Options 1 or 3 for Step #4 in these directions.  If the correct publication title does appear, click the circle before the correct title.
  7. In the lower right corner, click the blue “Add Funding” button.
  8. Add “Brian Bahnson” as the PI for the CBI grant in the name boxes provided.

Under his name, all grants he is associated with will come up. Click the box for the T-32 grant number.  (Full number T32- GM008550.)

  1. In the lower right corner, click the blue “Upload Files” button.
  2. Up load the corresponding pieces of your article/paper into the correct upload boxes:
    1. Manuscript
    2. All figures individually (Get extra figure boxes at the bottom of the upload lines.)
    3. All tables individually (Get extra table boxes at the bottom of the upload lines.)
    4. All supplemental materials (Get extra Supplemental boxes at the bottom of the upload lines.)
  3. **** Each individual box for each figure, table, or supplemental material upload MUST be individually “titled” in the Label box. Some examples of “titles” used could be: “Figure 1,” “Figure 2,” “Table 7,” “Table of Energy Data,” or “Supplemental Flux Data.” You should use titles that make sense to the information you have uploaded.
  4. Click the blue button marked “Check Files” and a PDF will be created containing all the uploads you provided. (This may take a few minutes.)
  5. In the upper left corner, click on the title for the PDF that has been generated. (Usually starts with “PDF Receipt [2018….])
  6. Check over the PDF for any errors.
    1. If errors exist/changes need to be made, click on the blue “Upload Files” button (bottom right) to continue adding information to this document and repeat steps 12-14.
    2. If no changes are necessary, click on the blue “Set Reviewer and Embargo” button (bottom right)
  7. Enter your own name as the reviewer by clicking the circle in front of your name.
  8. Set the embargo period. (Usually not to exceed 12 months from the date of publication.)
  9. Submit the materials to NIHMS. You will then receive an e-mail to log back in at a later date to make a final approval of the materials.
  10. AFTER the NIHMS receives your materials, you can watch the manuscripts progress on your Manuscript Page (when you first log into NIHMS.)
    1. The file will be moved to the column “In Process” while NIHMS converts the PDF materials to a publishable format.
    2. When that conversion process is finished, the file will move to the column “Completed.”
  11. Once NIHMS has processed your article/paper, they will send you a final e-mail with your submission marked as completed and your new PMCID assigned.
  12. Send this PMCID number to: amnowak@udel.edu. It will be added to our Student Publication bibliography.

CONGRATULATIONS on completing the PMCID process!!!!
