For: Girl Scouts from the Chesapeake Girl Scout Council (6th- 12th Grade)

Girls Scouts, Let Us Help You! Sussex County Master Gardeners are hosting a Plant Life Training Event for Girl Scouts from the Chesapeake Girl Scout Council interested in learning more about plant life, gardening, and careers in horticulture. Participants will receive training in the following areas for your Plant Life Interest Project Badge: 3 Skill Builders, 2 Technology, 1 Career and will receive information for developing future Service Projects in the plant life area. There is a $10 registration fee to cover the cost of materials for the training. (Make checks payable to “Sussex County Master Gardeners.”) Participants will receive a soil test kit and complete a flower arrangement as part of the training. We ask that one adult/leader per troop attend the training session with the scouts (There is no fee for the adults).

The event will be held in the Sussex County Demonstration and Teaching Garden, located immediately behind the UD Carvel Research & Education Center.

We will move inside to Meeting Room 3 if there is inclement weather (no rain date). Pre-registration is required. Public invited to tour Sussex County Garden

The Sussex County Master Gardeners are pleased to invite the public to a Garden Walk at the Master Gardeners’ Demonstration Garden on, Thursday, September 23, 2010, 6 p.m.   The garden is located behind the county Extension office, 16483 County Seat Highway, Georgetown. The event is free.

Enjoy our late season garden in the cool of the evening.  In addition to enjoying the garden, a number of Master Gardeners will be available to provide information and help on a wide variety of gardening topics including:  lawns, vegetable gardens, perennial gardens, herbs, insects, and fall clean-up.  Questions may be directed Karen Adams. 302-856-2585 Ext. 540.

Sussex County Master Gardeners invite public to Open House, Saturday July 17, 2010. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sussex County Master Gardeners, of Delaware Cooperative Extension for both Delaware State University and University of Delaware, invite you to their Open House on Saturday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sussex County Extension Office in Georgetown.   Admission is FREE.  Visitors are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to the event and join Master Gardeners in supporting the Delaware Does More Program – growing food and funds for neighbors in need. The Sussex County Extension Office is located at 16483 County Seat Highway, Route 9, west of Georgetown (west of Sussex Tech High School and on the same side of the road). Look for the blue and gold tent in the Sussex County Demonstration Garden, immediately behind the office building.  Ample parking is available.

Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer your gardening questions.  Visit our native plant, herb, shade, bog, annual, perennial, pond, butterfly and children’s gardens.  Get ideas for gardening with limited space using raised beds and containers.  What varieties grow well in Sussex County?  Tour our azalea, hydrangea and annual trial gardens to find out.

Have a plant problem? Bring it to our Plant Clinic for identification and recommendations.

Door Prizes will be awarded to visitors.  No rain date is set for this event.

Sussex County Master Gardeners announce free spring and summer events

The Sussex County Master Gardeners are pleased to announce the dates of several events to be held in their Demonstration Garden this spring and summer.  The garden is located behind the county Extension office, 16483 County Seat Highway (Route 9), Georgetown, Del., approximately ¼ miles west of Sussex Tech High School. All events are free to the public.

Garden Walks will be held on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 7 p.m. and on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at 7p.m.    In addition to enjoying the garden, a number of Master Gardeners will be available to provide information and help on a wide variety of gardening topics including:  lawns, vegetable gardens, perennial gardens, shrubs and insects.

The Master Gardeners Annual Open House will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This ‘Day in the Garden’  event features, in addition to the garden, information stations on a number of gardening subjects, a plant clinic, activities in the Children’s Garden, and a plant sale.

Delaware Extension congratulates Master Gardener Class of 2009

April is National Volunteer Month and an appropriate time to congratulate the Delaware Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Volunteers Class of 2009.  To obtain the title of “Master Gardener,” applicants must complete approximately 60 hours of instruction and 45 hours of volunteer work.  They have all recently completed their volunteer hours!  The Master Gardener Class of 2009 received instruction in the following areas: plant growth, soils and plant nutrients, plant propagation, plant identification, pesticide safety, home plantings, perennials and herbs, vegetable gardening, turf establishment and management, fruit production, composting, backyard habitats, weed control in lawns and gardens, diagnosing plant diseases and insects.

Sussex Master Gardener's helpline to go live April 15

Sussex County Master Gardeners are happy spring has arrived and look forward to assisting the public with their gardening questions.

The Sussex County Master Gardeners are pleased to announce the opening of the Sussex County Garden Helpline for the 2010 gardening season.     The Helpline is a free and valuable gardening resource for the residents of Sussex County.  Master Gardeners are able to provide information and help on a wide variety of gardening topics including:  lawns, vegetable gardens, perennial gardens, shrubs and insects.   The Helpline will be open from April 15, 2010 through October 15, 2010.  Master Gardeners will be manning the phones from 10:00 a.m. to Noon and from 1 to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Call 302-856-2585, extension 535, to speak with a Master Gardener or leave a message.  A Master Gardener will respond to your questions as quickly as possible. 

 Sussex County Master Gardeners are volunteers for Delaware Cooperative Extension System. Cooperative Extension programs and employment are available to all without discrimination. Evidence of non-compliance may be reported through your local Cooperative Extension office.
