The third-party external tool integrations in Canvas updates planned for May 29 through June 2 are complete.  Updates were recommended to meet the latest learning tools standards.  Core functionality and features provided by the vendor should not change, but if you rely one of the updated tools, you may wish to contact your vendor’s customer support representative for information regarding how the change may affect your workflow.  For more information, please see the Canvas@UD blog post, Third-Party External Tool Integrations: Updates Summer 2023.

If you use any of the updated external tools listed below, please review any steps you may need to take to ensure the tool works correctly in your course site.

Perusall

The LTI 1.1 legacy tool is no longer available for installation in Settings -> Apps, and there is no more need to request an installation key and secret!  The updated tool is now installed at the Canvas@UD account level as Perusall 1.3.  You can activate the tool named Perusall 1.3 through Settings -> Navigation.  It can be found in the disabled tools list.  If you have an existing “Perusall” tool in your disabled course list, you likely copied a course with the legacy tool installed.  Please do not use it.  If you wish to have the entry removed from your course, send a request to canvas-info@udel.edu.  The LMS team will be monitoring catalog course sites be beginning 23F to remove installations of legacy tool.

The first step to joining the new integration is to launch Perusall 1.3 from the course navigation menu after activation – which will prompt you with a one-time confirm merge email if you previously had an LTI 1.1 course.  Confirm and merge accounts in the e-mail and then re-launch in your Canvas course.  If this is your first time using Perusall, there will be no email.   Once you complete the transition, you will no longer be able to access the LTI 1.1 integrations in previously-taught courses from Canvas, but the content from these courses is still available at Perusall.com under My Courses.  For instructions on copying course materials from one course to another in Perusall to transfer content, see How do I use Perusall to teach the same course again?

If you copy a previous Canvas course with assignments linked to Perusall 1.1, we recommend you delete those Canvas assignments before adding any assignments to your Perusall course.  The new Perusall 1.3 feature to synchronize assignments with the LMS will send any assignments created in your Perusall 1.3 course with your Canvas course automatically by default.  If you prefer to link assignments manually, you should disable the automatic synchronization before adding assignments to your Perusall course to prevent duplicates.

You can confirm which version of the Perusall tool was used to create your course using the tags at the top of your Perusall course page:

Please confirm you are using the LTI 1.3 integration for future courses.  Review this comparison chart to see the benefits of moving to the new version.  For specific LMS instructor set up instructions, see LMS Setup Instructions.   For more information, see Grade Sync in LTI 1.3.  Perusall also has several webinar and training videos that discuss the difference in using the two versions.  Finally, for quick questions & answers, see 1.3 FAQ.

FlatWorld Homework

The updated integration is available for use in your course in the same manner at the legacy installation – as an external tool assignment or external tool entry in a module.  The name of the tool for selection has changed to FlatWorld (no longer the legacy FlatWorld Homework).  Please remember links to the legacy tool in all existing Canvas course sites may no longer work, and copied assignments or module entries may require re-linking.  For FlatWorld support, please visit the FlatWorld Homework – Instructor Guides or contact your vendor representative.

McGraw Hill ALEKS

As a result of this update, three McGraw Hill tools are no longer available:  McGraw Hill ALEKS, McGraw Hill Campus, and McGraw Hill Campus-Online (in Graduate Online Programs only).  The updated integration is available for use in your course by activating the MH ALEKS tool in Settings -> Navigation.  It can be found in the disabled tools list. There is no longer an option for adding the tool as an external assignment or module entry.  How the tool integrates into the course is determined by the vendor.  Please remember links to the legacy tools in all existing Canvas course sites may no longer work, and copied assignments or module entries may require re-linking.  For ALEKS support, please visit the ALEKS Instructor Support Guides or contact your vendor representative.

Vista Higher Learning

Because of the new integration method Vista Higher Learning (VHL Central), instructors intending to use the tool must request activation in a course.  Please send your request to canvas-info@udel.edu.  Once enabled in your course, the VHL Central tool will be added to your course navigation menu.  Please remember links to the legacy tool in all existing Canvas course sites may no longer work, and copied assignments or module entries may require re-linking.  Please visit the Vista Higher Learning website for support or contact your vendor representative.

If you have questions about these changes, please contact the LMS group at canvas-info@udel.edu.
