Update, October 26, 2022: Canvas has updated its timeline for New Quizzes and has removed the June 2024 enforcement date.  Please refer to the Canvas@UD New Quizzes Transition Update.

After much feedback from institutions within the community, Canvas has updated its timeline for New Quizzes enforcement and Classic Quizzes deprecation.  Canvas will keep Classic Quizzes available for use through June 2024. New Quizzes will still be available as a feature to enable in your course, but Canvas is now allowing more local control of the implementation phases. For more information on their update, please see the Canvas community blog post, Extension for Classic Quizzes.

So what does this change mean?  For the immediate future, it means the previously-announced Canvas enforcement of New Quizzes as the only quiz creation tool starting July, 2022, no longer applies. For the remainder of the transition, the Canvas@UD staff will now be able to control the opt-in timeframe for the major milestones that must occur as part of the transition process.  We have already enabled New Quizzes as an option for you to enable in your course, but will need to plan when to prevent new Classic Quizzes creation, when to force migration of Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes, and when to disable the Classic Quizzes tool before it is removed from the interface by Canvas in June, 2024.  We know the New Quizzes tool has additional development milestones to complete before we can ask our faculty to begin the transition, so for now, no changes will be made to our current configuration.  Several of these development milestones, including the integration of the standard rich content editor (RCE), are scheduled for this year and Canvas@UD staff will monitor their progress.  Expect an update of transition plans in the Fall 2022 semester.

Throughout this process, Canvas@UD staff will update you about the status of New Quizzes through Canvas@UD blogposts and release notes, all of which can be found on the Canvas@UD gateway page.  Introduction to New Quizzes workshops are offered monthly, so please register if you are interested in learning more.

For more information, visit the New Quizzes Instructor Guide or the New Quizzes Hub. If you have any questions about the changes or about how to use Canvas effectively, IT-Academic Technology Services staff is always available at the IT-ATS Welcome Bar or you can send your questions to canvas-info@udel.edu.
