Urban Forest Ecology Research Assistant
Position Description
The Trammell Urban Forest Ecology Lab in the Plant and Soil Sciences Department has multiple positions available for undergraduate research assistants starting March 15, 2020 continuing through August 2020. The research project requires occasional field work throughout the spring semester leading up to a full-time summer position. The undergraduate research assistants will   participate in a long-term urban forest ecology project, the FRAME (FoRests Among Managed Ecosystems). The 2020 research project entails vegetation and soil sampling in 38 forest sites across the region. Desired qualifications include: plant identification skills and a strong desire to work in local forests.

POSITION: Farm-to-Table Organic Garden Summer Intern
REPORTS TO: Cook/Garden Supervisor
GENERAL SUMMARY: The Pendle Hill Garden is a half-acre vegetable garden, which
uses organic gardening practices and aspects of permaculture design. Utilizing no-till
techniques, the garden produces a variety of fruits and vegetables that are incorporated
into the meals served at Pendle Hill.
The Summer Garden Intern will participate in the day-to-day garden tasks and projects
under the guidance of the Cook/Garden Supervisor, with the goal of fostering and
sustaining a holistic, cost-effective, land-centered food ethic that nurtures the body and
spirit of the Pendle Hill community in accordance with our food philosophy and Quaker
Testimonies. While the majority of the Summer Garden Intern’s time will be spent in the
garden, the hottest few hours of the day will be spent in the kitchen, assisting in the
incorporation of garden produce into meals, as well as performing other tasks as
assigned by the Dining Services Manager. The Garden Intern will also spend one full
day a week working in the kitchen.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Pendle Hill is a Quaker study, retreat and conference
center that offers programs to people of all faiths and backgrounds. Pendle Hill offers
residential, commuter, and online study programs, weekend workshops and retreats,

Program Assistant, Point Lookout Organic Garden, Centerville, DE

Point Lookout is a small organic garden outside of Centerville, DE that hosts urban youth ages 4-18 during the growing season.  The Garden is a project of the Point Lookout Farmlife & Water Preserve Foundation and is free to visit by partner organizations.  We have a range of programs that focus on horticulture, nutrition, animal husbandry, and the broader ecosystems.  We have vegetable, berry and flower gardens as well as chickens, horses, goats and bee hives.  The Garden is surrounded by woods and meadow trails and a riparian area.  There is also a large outdoor brick oven that is used daily for cooking.

 We are looking for an assistant to work with our Garden Manager and Educational Programs Supervisor (the Manager) to prepare and implement our programs from mid-June through mid-August.  Our assistant should be passionate about connecting kids to nature and the origins of their food.  Duties of the Assistant would include helping the Manager:

  • Prepare and plant the gardens,
  • Manage gardens’ growth and replanting,
  • Care for the animals (including making of goat cheese and honey retrieval),
  • Prepare and cook food,
  • Lead and supervise groups of students around the garden and surrounding areas
  • Record daily events and activities, and
  • Develop new activities and areas of focus.

Plant Health Specialist

Job Description:
Hopewell Nursery is a large wholesale nursery located in Bridgeton, NJ. We are seeking a motivated individual to oversee our 1PM and pesticide program at one of our farms. This is a full time, year round position. The right candidate will scout for plant pests, diseases, and disorders, identify problems and apply chemical and/or cultural methods to manage the problem. He or she will run a crew responsible for pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizer, make chemical requests for order, and buy personal protective equipment and other essential items for the spray department. The applicant will work directly with the Plant Health Director to assess situations and determine a proper course of action.
This position will also require that New Jersey worker protection and spray reporting records and standards are in compliance. Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred, but not required. The candidate must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, plant pathology or related field and the ability to acquire a private pesticide applicator’s license within 6 months of hiring. Salary is competitive based upon education and experience.

National Association of Conservation Districts
 is seeking 2020 spring interns to work full-time in Washington, D.C. Interns will work with NACD’s government affairs and communications staff to advance the association’s legislative agenda. Interns are given projects to enhance their understanding of Congress and the legislative process.
NACD interns are often college juniors or seniors who are interested in natural resources policy, environmental science or agricultural fields. A performance-based stipend is awarded at the end of the internship.

Description: The Specialty Division of Helena Agri-Enterprises provides products and services to customers in
specialty markets across the United States. Markets we serve include but are not limited to the golf, lawn care,
sports turf, ornamental and industrial vegetation management industries. This position will assist our Helena
sales team with providing our customers with excellent products and service. The location and dates of the
internship will be determined once candidates are selected and will be based on their interests and availability.

Duties and Working Conditions: This position will expose the interns to nearly every aspect of the distribution
supply-chain including but not limited to:

The Center for Historic Architecture and Design (CHAD) helps communities preserve their heritage in the face of rapid development and change. CHAD ensures that preservation and historic resources are part of planning and policy development at local, state, national, and international levels. CHAD excels at research and documentation of historic properties and traditional technologies; National Register nominations; and cultural resource surveys that contribute to creation of historic districts, heritage tourism, and similar efforts.
