Delaware Nature Society (DelNature) has spent over 50 years connecting people to nature with diverse environmental programs and services. As one of the most well respected environmental organizations in the region, we envision a healthy and sustainable environment for all plants, animals, and people living in our region. Our mission is to connect people with the natural world to improve our environment through education, advocacy, and conservation. Working state-wide in Delaware and the surrounding region, we operate four sites where people experience nature in unique hands-on ways reaching thousands of visitors each year.

Job Description

The Summer Environmental Education Intern works at DuPont Environmental Education Center (DEEC) in Wilmington, Delaware. DEEC welcomes thousands of guests throughout the year. Delaware Nature Society’s goal is to interact with these visitors and introduce them to DelNature, the site’s nature and wildlife, and the menu of programs and activities available to them.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the teaching and preparation of summer environmental programs for children and adults at DEEC.
  • Greets and interacts with visitors to the site.
  • Attends instructor-training workshops.
  • Leads week-long summer camp sessions for children ages 6-12.

Training and resources are provided to gain knowledge in environmental science topics related to the site and region. Interns attend summer camp instructor training, which includes canoe training and CPR/First Aid certification. Training consists of formal all-staff events, one-on-one mentoring, and the opportunity to work alongside many different educators with different teaching styles and skill sets.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Passion for the outdoors, enthusiasm for working with people.
  • A high level of initiative.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be 18 or older.

Essential Dates

The individual selected for the position will work about 30 hours per week. Individual schedules are somewhat flexible and set with the Education Coordinator. The Summer Environmental Education Intern can expect to work Monday-Friday with potential evening and/or weekend hours.

Salary and Benefits

Wage is $10.00/hr.
