Center for Intercultural Engagement (CIE)
The University of Delaware has released blueprints and plans for a Center for Intercultural Engagement (CIE). The Center for Intercultural Engagement will be located on the second floor of Perkins Student Center (the former space of the Center for Counseling & Student Development).
In addition to space for student clubs to hold meetings and gather, there will also be an Interfaith Meditation and Prayer Room, all-gender restrooms and an ablution station. Islamic practitioners are required to wash in a very specific process in order to enter a state of purity before they pray. Ablution stations will provide a safe, comfortable space to clean one’s face, hands, and feet.
The CIE will also serve as a hub for tackling food insecurity at the University of Delaware. There will be a food pantry and supplies available for students in need. In addition to food and supplies, there will be a “Clothing Coop” to provide access to free gender-affirming clothing and professional attire.
Eid al-Fitr
Today marks the end of Ramadan, a month-long Muslim community celebration. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunset to sundown for a month. They break their daily fast with an evening meal after sunset called “Iftar.” Ramadan reminds Muslims to have compassion for underprivileged people and have a more difficult time getting food for themselves. After the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr [eed ul fit-ur], the Festival of Breaking the Fast.
