The Lilly
About the poem:
The Lilly is a poem of experience that romanticises an object, in this case a lily, and it reflects on the lily’s ability to possess purity through its white and unthreatening form. Unlike the lily, the rose and the sheep are tainted with experience and they are armed with thorns and horns to protect themselves. The lily, however, is bright, white, and beautiful.

The Lilly
The modest Rose puts forth a thorn,
The humble Sheep a threat’ning horn;
While the Lilly white shall in Love delight,
Nor a thorn, nor a threat, stain her beauty bright.
