Caryl Churchill was born on September 3, 1938 in London, England. She attended Oxford University where she earned her BA in English in 1960. While attending school there she wrote three plays; Downstairs, You’ve No Need to be Frightened, and Having a Wonderful Time. In 1961, Caryl met her husband, David Harter and were married the same year. Churchill then got a job with BBC radio from 1962 to 1974 writing plays. In 1974, Churchill decided to take her abilities to the stage. She teamed up with numerous theatre companies to develop and hone her skills as a playwright.
