Jobs: Something You Love or Something That Gets You Money

One of the biggest struggles in college is the decision to either study something you love or to study something you know will get you a good job. I think that a person should attempt to try and find a balance between the two to get the best career possible for them. What I mean is that if you love working with kids, but you also like to help sick or injured people you could do some kind of medical major that focuses on pediatrics. The same thing goes for a person who wants to be a veterinarian – the combination of loving animals and helping out the sick and injured ones makes this choice of study possible. These two examples are prime when it comes to trying to find a balance that will be super beneficial to the student in the long run.
However, there is a time when someone will have to make the decision of having to study what will get them a better job and salary versus what they love. There are many cases were young parents have to put what they would love to study on hold and choose the job that pays well in order to provide for their families. Also, more times than not the parents would not be able to focus on what the would love to study until later in life. Another scenario would be anybody going into the military (and possibly their spouses). The active duty person goes into the military as a way to provide for themselves if the college path is not for them, and later on they are able to go back to school and study something they love with the help of their GI bill.
In the end I think that a person should do what’s best for them and do what they know will get them a job. Even if that means going with something you don’t love. If you are able to find a college career pathway that leads you to doing something you love then that is great! But sometimes you have to suck it up, and choose the job pathway that provides for you realistically. Lastly, if you do decide to choose a college pathway with something you don’t really love, you can always minor in it [what you love], so you still at least study it to a point (just not as your main focus).

  1. I liked this blog post because it kind of expressed both sides. Like yes do what you love but sometimes you have to make that decision to study what will earn you money. It’s a lot to think about. Nice post Bria!

  2. I definitely agree with this point of view and it was very similar to mine. Money is important to support yourself and family, but if you can pursue something you love at the same time, it makes it even better 🙂

  3. Bria, I really appreciate your outlook. I can tell you put family’s welfare before individual satisfaction and I like that. Keep on making that paper!
