10:30 a.m., May 2, 2011–The University of Delaware Office of Equity and Inclusion has announced the winners of the annual Diversity Awards. This year, five honorees were chosen for four awards, as follows:

The Bessie B. Collins Award, a $500 cash prize, was established in honor of UD’s former dean of women, who was an early advocate and supporter of continuing education for women, to recognize a promising woman who has overcome difficulties in pursuing her goals. Talia Sykes, a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Education, has been named this year’s honoree. Despite hospitalization and the passing of a close mentor, Sykes has risen above these challenges to be an excellent scholar, leader, and mentor to others – particularly those in underrepresented categories.
