The UD ADVANCE Institute is funded by a National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant. We provide leadership mini-grants that will promote ADVANCE goals, and will enhance and further the careers of women faculty in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and the Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS). Recognizing the role that intersectionality plays as it relates to the racial and gender dynamics of faculty career progression, we especially invite women faculty of color in these disciplines to apply.
Mini-grants are intended to encourage mentoring, networking, and leadership-development opportunities for women STEM/SBS faculty. The UD ADVANCE Institute has a special focus on advancing women faculty to leadership at all career stages, including the promotion from associate professor to full professor. We therefore welcome proposals for projects that will help women reach their career goals.
Please note, the focus of NSF ADVANCE is on faculty success, not on priming the STEM pipeline or on graduate student development. For this reason, our mini-grants cannot support activities to increase or retain the number of women entering into or persisting in STEM undergraduate or doctoral degree programs. Additional limitations on our grant funds include the inability to fund international travel and graduate students.
Examples of projects that may be funded by a UD ADVANCE mini-grant include:
- Faculty external mentoring or professional coaching;
- Participation in external faculty mentoring programs;
- Participation in faculty-development or leadership programs or workshops;
- Faculty travel for participation in a conference that in some way provides leadership or networking opportunities, not funded by a research grant or start-up funds;
- Innovative mentoring or networking activities that involve STEM/SBS faculty within a department, research discipline, etc.
Note, all travel funded by a UD ADVANCE leadership mini-grant must be within the U.S.

Note, matching funds from departments are encouraged, but not required. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis while grant funds are still available.
Priority will be given to those who have not won a mini-grant in the past year.
