Breathing Techniques From Our GEM Curriculum

Get in an upright seated position with your back straight, feet flat on the floor, roll
shoulders back, make sure you can breathe easily.

In this exercise, you’re going to
imagine a #8 laying on it’s side, and trace the shape of the figure 8 while breathing
deeply. You can trace the lazy 8 in the air, on your desk, or on your leg.

lazy 8 breathing

Starting at the star…
INHALE for 3 seconds, as you trace the LEFT half of the figure 8
When you hit the star, EXHALE for 3 seconds, tracing the RIGHT half
REPEAT 3x!
This breathing technique gives us an opportunity to relax a little bit and slow our
breathing.

IASIC

Marijuana Addiction, or cannabis use disorder is a diagnosis that occurs in 9% of adults and 17% of teens who use marijuana. Chronic marijuana users are more likely to develop addiction at 25-50%.

Youth who use marijuana are 4 – 7 times more likely than adults to develop a cannabis use disorder.

IASIC, the International Academy on the Science and Impact of Cannabis, are doctors who educate on marijuana. IASIC is an organization of international experts on cannabis who are guided by medicine and science to provide accurate and honest information that guides decision-making. We recognize that the use of cannabis is potentially harmful, and that policies or practices which enhance or increase the use of cannabis risk serious medical and social consequences.

September is National Recovery Month

National Recovery Month (Recovery Month), which started in 1989, is a national observance held every September to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the nation’s strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery in all its forms possible.

SAMHSA aims to increase public awareness surrounding mental health and addiction recovery. STEAM team logo

The STEAM Team is here to provide lessons, activities, curriculum support for Delaware teachers, leaders, afterschool programs and 4-H communities. Our overall goal is to teach youth leadership skills and STEAM-themed topics to bring back to their communities.

BECOME A STEAM AMBASSADOR

Joining the STEAM Team means you are a youth interested in becoming a STEAM Ambassador—learning STEAM-themed lessons to take back to your youth group, school or community. You, the “STEAM Ambassador,” will lead by teaching a STEAM-based lesson/activity to others!

Twila is your point of contact. She will guide you through becoming a STEAM Ambassador. Get you set up with lesson topics and materials and guide you through the process of taking on the role of a leader in STEAM education.

STEAM Ambassadors will meet on Zoom with Twila, learn a STEAM topic and bring it back to their youth groups, schools and communities!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Parents, grandparents, college students, high school seniors — We need you!

This STEAM Team is developed to get our Delaware youth thinking innovatively, we need youth to use their talents, and develop their intelligence working collaboratively. Are you someone who is interested in positively impacting our youth and community?

Volunteers are crucial to this program. You do not need a background in STEAM to be part of this experience. On the STEAM TEAM, youth drive their learning while volunteers offer support and guidance. If you are interested please fill in the Form linked below and we will be in touch with you shortly!

Volunteers are still needed for the same reason: Adults wanting to interact with youth and share their love for STEAM education. Volunteers will attend the same STEAM Team Ambassadors Zoom and learn a STEAM topic to take back and teach to their schools and communities.
