Partner, National Practice Leader of Governance Services, Deloitte & Touche LLP
Ms. Nicole Sandford is the national practice leader for Deloitte & Touche LLP’s Governance Services. She specializes in board of director and governance consulting, focusing particularly on improving board and board committee practices through a progressive approach to assessment and education. In this role since 2001, Ms. Sandford has worked with dozens of public company boards and executive teams to address board governance challenges. She serves clients in a variety of industries, including banks under the supervision of various regulatory bodies, and a number of national not-for-profit organizations.
Nicole played a critical role in the development of the Deloitte Center for Corporate Governance, and in the firm’s response to SEC rules proposed as a result of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. She is a frequent speaker and writer on governance issues. Her past appearances include governance events hosted by Deloitte, The International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN), The Conference Board, The Society of Corporate Secretaries and Governance Professionals, Practising Law Institute, Institute of Internal Auditors, Financial Executives International, Corporate Board Member Magazine, and the New York City Bar Association, as well as Yale University, Rice University, New York University and Columbia University, among others. In 2010, she published a Deloitte whitepaper on board diversity entitled “Diversifying the American Board: Thought leaders collaborate on current challenges and practical solutions.” Ms. Sandford also has been published in Corporate Secretary, BusinessWeek Online, The Wall Street Journal, NACD Directorship, Agenda, and Directors & Boards. She co-authored several executive reports with FEI including Earnings Guidance: The Current State of Play (2009); and Audit Committee Trends and Tools (2003).
Nicole is a member of the advisory board of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware, and is a member of the board and audit committee of the Global Partnership for Afghanistan. She also co-chairs the Financial Women Association’s (FWA) Directorship and Governance Committee. Nicole is a past member of the board of directors of the Society of Corporate Secretaries and Governance Professionals (SCSGP), and served as the Audit Committee Chair. In 2008, Ms. Sandford was named a “Rising Star of Corporate Governance” by the Millstein Center for Corporate Governance and Performance at Yale University’s School of Management. In 2012, Nicole was featured in “The Glass Elevator: A Guide to Leadership Presence for Women on the Rise” published by 85 Broads.
A certified public accountant in both Connecticut and New York, Nicole has extensive experience in Deloitte’s audit practice, focusing primarily on publicly traded SEC registrants. She has served as the lead audit partner for public companies in the manufacturing and technology industries.
