Today we’ve had reports of two phishing scams similar to many we’ve seen before, but with some different wording and bad links.

  1. The first one is a short phish that hopes the subject “UD Alert system” will shock you so much that you won’t notice the poor grammar and that the “MyUD” link doesn’t go to a UD link:
Another phish that uses bit.ly to obscure a malicious link.

This phish presents another example of a bit.ly link being used to hide the URL of a malicious site.

  2. The second one is a little sneakier, but still a pretty obvious phish. Grammar errors abound, yet we know that some members of the UD community were hooked by this scam:
A phish that hooks people with UD IT jargon
We suspect that people fell for this phish in part because the URL includes UD-related abbreviations (cas, nss, udel, edu) and because they didn’t pay attention that the site was really a weebly.com site. Or perhaps the people who fell for this scam were so shocked by the message’s threats that they ignored the grammar and punctuation errors.

Neither of these phish are examples of well-crafted spear phishing scams. But as long as people keep clicking links without inspecting them, phishers will continue to send out more and more of these scams.
