A UD Library patron reported a spam message last week that looked a lot like legitimate email from the Library — down to the signature at the end.

Library Scam with tricky URL

How can you tell it’s a scam?

  • UD passwords do not currently expire: in November 2016, the University will begin expiring passwords older than 15 months old. So the scammer jumped the gun on that matter.
  • The main reason you can tell it’s a scam is apparent when you see the URL you are asked to click. The scammer has used udel, edu, and lib to construct a URL designed to fool the University community. Note that https://udel.edu.lib is NOT a valid udel.edu URL.

If you see an email like this one and think there is a chance it’s a legitimate message, contact the alleged sender using published directory information — in this case the UD Library — and ask about the message’s legitimacy.
