Here’s what we talked about at our meeting last Wednesday:
1. TRIP TO PHILLY. We will be going to Mercy Edible Park a week from today, on Sunday, May 6th. We will get to learn about urban gardening in Philly from one of the movement’s pioneers, Robyn Mello, and meet other people involved in the Mercy garden. Robyn said their work party will go from about 11 a.m. to around 6 p.m., so I think we should aim toleave at 11, arrive in Philly around 12, stay for a few hours, and then we can either leave or explore more of Philly – whatever the group decides. Also, I asked Robyn if we could bring food or anything else, and she said that food would be great, and the party will also serve as a “free store,” so if you have any clothes, books, CDs, shoes, bedding, etc. that are still usable but you want to get rid of, bring them! The volunteers will be swapping items, and anything left over will be donated! SO if anyone wants to buy food of some sort to bring, that would be great, and you will get reimbursed for it.
**PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL if you are planning on going to Philly and/or can drive!!!
2. ELECTIONS will take place at our last meeting of the semester on Wednesday, May 9th at 7 p.m. (location TBA). The positions are: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. We are looking for motivated, dedicated members who want to keep the SOCI Club active and expanding! We also ask that only active members come to elections to vote. If you have questions on any of the positions, feel free to shoot me an email!
3. T-SHIRTS. What would you guys think about getting t-shirts made up next semester? I was thinking we could use some SOCI humor along the lines of: “How will you leave your Marx at UD? Hang out with Du Bois!” – GET IT?! Hysterical, I know. But other ideas are welcome! We can talk more about them at our last meeting.
PHEW. I know that was a lot of information and if you actually read through all of it, I salute you, dedicated SOCI Clubber. Remember, LET ME KNOW ASAP IF YOU’RE GOING TO PHILLY!

I know this is a little late (like a week and a half!) but I just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone that came on the Red Emma’s trip, especially Shannon and Anthony for driving! Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun, and I’m so glad we’ve gotten one trip under our belt! Pictures will be up on the website soon, so take a look!
And since these past two weeks have been filled with midterms, we decided to wait until after spring break to have our next meeting – on April 4th. More details to come, but I just wanted to give you guys a heads up!

This is just a reminder that Dr. Victor Perez will be giving his talk, “What to do with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology,” tomorrow (Wednesday)! 
Dr. Perez will be discussing the skills gained from the Sociology major and how they apply to prospective careers, as well as research by the American Sociological Association as to what SOCI majors actually end up doing upon graduation. The talk should be extremely informative, so make sure you come! Bring your friends! Students with all majors can benefit from this talk.

So, we’re less than a week away from our TRIP TO PHILLY to check out the urban gardening movement occurring there!
For those of you who missed our meeting last Tuesday, Robyn Mello will be giving us a tour of the South Philly Garden that she has started up to help low-income neighborhoods gain access to fresh produce. We will be helping out around the garden, do some planting, and then decide where we’d like to eat – either out somewhere on Center Street or South Street, or back at Robyn’s apartment for a home-cooked meal using her own grown vegetables!
The trip is on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23rd. We’re aiming to leave UD between 9 and 10 a.m. – the earlier the leave, the earlier we can get back! This is an extremely flexible trip however, so if more people would like to leave closer 10 than 9, we’re totally up for it!
We just need to know WHO IS COMING and WHO CAN DRIVE by Thursday. For those of you WHO CAN DRIVE, you need to fill out a form (Agreement Governing the Use of Private Vehicles) AT LEAST TWO DAYS prior to the trip, so by FRIDAY at the absolute latest.
Right now, Harini has offered to drive, and Lauren G., Natalie, and Mike can potentially drive. If anyone else has a car, we’d really appreciate you offering to drive! We want to make sure that everyone who wants to go on the trip actually can!

Let me know ASAP if you’d like to come and if you can drive! Looking forward to the trip! :)

So, a few orders of business:
  1. I’d like to thank everyone that came out to Dr. Perez’s talk last Thursday, and I hope you all found it super informative – I know I did! If you guys have any comments on the talk, please let us know! Any feedback as to how we might improve on the talk for next year would be much appreciated!
  2. Our next meeting will be on THURSDAY, APRIL 28th. We will be meeting at Mechanical Hall at 7:00 p.m. to view the “Bodyscapes” art exhibition on display! It should make for some great discussion and a pleasant Thursday evening!
  3. Since we’re officially an RSO now, we were lucky enough to receive our full standard funds for the rest of the semester! What better way to end the school year with a bang than to take a trip to Baltimore?! We’ve briefly discussed it before, but we really need to get an estimate on how many of you would be interested in going to Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse in Baltimore. We’re looking at the first weekend in May, most likely SATURDAY, MAY 7th. Please email me in the next few days as to whether (or not) you’d be interested in going. April (our activities coordinator!) needs to submit certain forms at least two weeks in advance of our trip, so get back to me by Friday at the latest if you are interested!!!
  4. The Steve Lerner talk on environmental discrimination issues (mentioned at Dr. Perez’s talk) is on THURSDAY, MAY 12th from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. The SOCI Club is co-sponsoring the event, so stop by if you can!
So remember, if you’re interested in taking a day trip to Baltimore for a couple of hours, observing Red Emma’s alternative business style, and exploring the beautiful area of Mount Vernon, let me know by FRIDAY! Thanks, everyone!

I hope you’re all soaking up every ounce of spring break! So here are a few things that we talked about at our last meeting:
  1. We will not be meeting on April 7th, but rather our next meeting will be on April 14th.
  2. Our meeting on the 14th will be quickly touching on a few points, and then giving the rest of the time over to Dr. Perez for his talk on “What to do with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology.” Invite your friends, other SOCI majors, even Undeclareds! Dr. Perez will be discussing the skills gained from the SOCI major and how they apply to prospective careers, as well as research by the ASA as to what SOCI majors actually end up doing upon graduation. The talk should be extremely informative, so make sure you come!
  3. I had suggested that for the meeting following Dr. Perez’s talk, on April 28th, we could all meet at Mechanical Hall and check out the Bodyscapes art exhibition that is on display. For more information, check out: http://www.udel.edu/museums/exhibitions/2010/bodyscapes.html
  4. We also discussed planning a trip to Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse in Baltimore towards the end of April. We can grab a coffee and observe the anarchist/communist fashion in which Red Emma’s is run – a real world application of alternatives to capitalism! – and then walk around the area (Mount Vernon) for a bit. I suggested Saturday, April 30th, but the general consensus was that the 30th was no good because Relay For Life is on the same day. Sunday, May 1st, is a possibility, but I’d really like to get some feedback from you guys! Is that Sunday good for everyone? Let me know!
