February 1, 2016

Dear Instructor/Potential Instructor:

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Delaware in Lewes/Ocean View is already looking ahead to our June 2016 session.  We encourage you to volunteer as an instructor for the June program.  We look forward to the return of our staff of faithful, dedicated faculty members and welcome new instructors.  Please take a moment to review the Instructor Handbook.

If you have never been an Osher instructor please consider the following points voiced by our instructors:

  • Being an instructor is a very rewarding experience. If it was not, why do we have many repeat instructors.
  • The students are eager to learn. They are taking Osher classes because they want to.
  • The staff is eager to help you. In addition to Anna and Renee, there is computer and audio/visual support from John Lafferty(Lewes) and Bill Ashmore (Ocean View).
  • Osher members are anxious to help you. There is an Academic Affairs Committee comprised of volunteers who are experienced instructors and who represent the basic departments like Art, Life Skills, Science/Math, etc.
  • You are free to choose your topic. It will typically be a subject you have a high level of interest in, but you do not have to have been trained in.
  • Consider teaming up with someone to be joint instructors for a course.
  • “To teach is to learn twice.”

Classes will be offered in June, beginning June 3, 2016 and concluding June 30, 2016.  You may offer a one, two, three or four-week course.  Courses are two hours in length.

If you would be willing to participate as an instructor in the June Osher Lifelong Learning program, please Click Here to complete the online course proposal form or Click Here to print a copy.  Because of the lead time involved in publishing the June catalog, we must have your completed proposal by February  18, 2016.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Council has decided to assess a fee to members of classes that are providing course handouts that are printed at the program's expense.  This is a necessary step because of the large, and growing, costs of providing such materials.  Minimal handouts, up to 10 pages per student, would not be subject to a fee.  So that a fee may be calculated for your class, if you plan on the use of handout material, please estimate the number of pages per student over the duration of your course.  Try to be accurate, as the amount of fees collected essentially become the copying budget for your course.

As you begin preparing for the June program, please keep track of the time you spend in your class preparation and then record the minutes on the Volunteer Time Log form.  Later when you start instructing, count your travel time (up to one hour per occurrence) and teaching time.  Submit your volunteer hours form to the office.  This is important when we apply for grant money.

If you have any questions, or no longer wish to receive course proposal requests, please phone the office at 302-645-4111 or email Rmoy@udel.edu.  Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
