Informational Interview

I was looking through Youtube to see what people have done for their careers in International Relations and found a great example of a job that I would like to do. The man in the video was a foreign service specialist who had the opportunity to work in embassies and consulates while getting to live in different countries every two to three years. The man in the interview states the pros and cons of having such a job, from getting to live in different countries and experiencing different cultures to the strains of family life and possible dangerous areas a foreign service specialist.

Career Plan

A few weeks ago, I decided to double major and one of those majors will be an English degree. The reason why I would like an English degree is because I want to travel and I have the opportunity to travel to different locations around the world to teach English for a certain time. Before I would go out and leave, I would have to apply, so I would find a job before I would leave if I was accepted for a position somewhere. I think it would an incredible experience to travel to different countries and be able to see different cultures while having a paid job and possibly be able to live in a different country every few years.

With my International Relations degree, I would like to find internships in some type of government sector while studying at university. I would also enjoy the possibility of interning at a non-profit organization for a specific purpose like special interest in climate change because that interests me. If I like working in the government, I would try and apply in order to work as a foreign service officer for the United States or the United Kingdom. I would have to apply and go through rigorous testing, training, and preparation before I get assigned to a station if I get accepted into a program. After working for several years and gaining experience in this field to build a great resume, I would like to try to work at an embassy or at a consulate if I can get into one of those positions that is available. Being an ambassador or working at a consulate would be a job that I think would be incredible because you get to meet different heads of states and experience how other governments work intrinsically. This would be an amazing job and possibly career if I could get to live in places I never would’ve thought I would actually be able to live in.

Ideal Job Description

I have absolutely no idea what specific career I want for myself. It’s difficult to choose a career when I have different occupations that interest me. I do not know what career I want, but I do know what type of career I would like and that would be a career that involves travel. I would like a job where I get to interact with other people from a different country while living in a different country and learn from them. Money wouldn’t matter to me as much because I think that living life the way one want’s is more important than making truckloads of money and hating what you do. If working in an office is necessary, I wouldn’t mind that type of labor. I would much rather prefer to be on my feet and moving and be outside because sitting at a desk in class for over an hour makes me want to drive my head through a wall. Working in a group is more fun because different ideas can be passed around and you always learn new things from other people. If I had to choose a company to work for, I would like to work for a non-profit company that deals with something that is purposeful for people, like working in special interest to help promote climate change awareness or work in a Peace Corps type of job where I get to help build houses for people in need in a country that doesn’t have the same infrastructure as Western society. This type of career would provide a lot of satisfaction for myself, but I do not know which type of job in this field of work I would want to work in after college because I want to do them all. This is why I have decided to pursue an International Relations degree to get a broad look at what type of career I would like to have.

Intended Major Requirements

There are several requirements a student has to fulfill in order to receive an International Relations degree. The basic classes for International Relations consist of twenty-four total hours of the basic classes needed. There are five core classes one must take, two of which I have already taken: Introduction to American Politics and World Regional Geography. The other classes that I will have to take is Introduction to Global Politics and Introduction to Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. I will also have to take one Foreign Language and Literature course beyond the intermediate level. There are also two classes that students have to take, but I have already taken them: Western Civilization from 1648 to the Present and Introduction to Latin American History.

Major and Career Goals

I would be very unhappy if the career that I had would require me to sit at a desk all day. I am a very active person and enjoy being able to not sit in an office all day. Despite the fact that people can drive you up a wall, I enjoy engaging with people because you can always learn something from other people. I like to try and be social despite my “to myself” personality that I sometimes settle into. I look at these aspects about myself to see what type of job I would like to have as an adult. I also would love to travel around the world and experience new and different cultures. There are so many different walks of life out in the world and I would relish the opportunity to experience new adventures. The major I have been considering is International Relations for the reasons I’ve said before. I’ve always thought it would be neat to work at some type of embassy in a foreign country and see how people actually live in a place compared to what the media tells us. International Relations holds a variety of different fields one can go into, like government work, working in a non-profit organization, or even going to graduate school. With International Relations having a diverse spread of possible jobs, I think the major is great for me because I do not know exactly what type of career I want. If I choose to get a degree and end up not liking it, I can always go to graduate school. There are several different fields of study that the University of Delaware offers for the International Relations degree which peak my interest for what I may want to do in life, so I think that this field may be the best for me to study an possibly pursue as a career.

Money or Happiness?

I have always believed that people should do what they love when it comes to their occupation rather than having a job that is high paying. In today’s world, most careers require a college degree to even get their foot in the door. I have several friends that have gone to university and wanted to major something that will make them a lot of money, only for them to come back and say that they don’t like what they are studying or have already switched their majors after the first semester. The same goes for a career. I would prefer to have a career where I enjoy going to work everyday rather than despise a job where the only benefit is higher pay. Having more money does not guarantee happiness and higher paying jobs are usually the jobs that stress the workers even more. To have more stress and hate my job does not seem like a fun time at the office.
