For my interview I went to talk to my high school Japanese teacher Brian Sousa. Mr. Sousa or Sensei as I always called him, was the person I went to for all information regarding going towards a career in teaching a foreign language. When I asked him about why he began teaching, he said that he found it fun and just liked being able to spread the Japanese language to students like myself willing to learn. Sensei also told me that travelling to the country who’s language you will be teaching is essential even if you can’t spend years and years living there. A couple of months at a time is more valuable then no time. I then asked him what were some good things to do after getting my bachelor’s degree and he almost immediately said to go and get my masters in order to open up more opportunities. I definitely think going to talk to my old Japanese teacher was a good idea to figure out what I wanted to do and how to go about it in the future.
Career Plans
While teaching is my intended career I also want to do many things while I am teaching. Once I get my degree my first order of business is to teach abroad for at least a year. This will allow me to hit two birds with one stone by travelling the world and teaching as well. Once I complete that task I would like to teach in the States for a couple of years and then pursue my Masters degree in both French and Japanese education. One both of these are complete then I will continue on and get a Second language education degree to add to my teaching arsenal. I also wouldn’t mind learning more languages on the side while I go to accomplish these goals.
My Ideal Job
The job that I would consider my ideal job is what I’m going to school for: teaching. Though I’d rather be teaching at a university than a high school, I would be willing to settle for a job teaching high school as well. Despite the fact that a teacher’s salary is not the highest, I can work with the fact that I won’t be getting paid as much as a big shot lawyer or doctor as long as I like what I do. A teachers salary can range anywhere from about 40,000-70,000 (not exact numbers). I do prefer working indoors so not having a career that is constantly outside works well for me. As far as hours working goes, I generally don’t mind waking up a bit earlier in the day as long as I had enough rest the night before so I think I will do pretty well when it comes to the time I have to wake up. What I am also hoping for in my career is to be able to teach abroad even if only temporary. It has always been a dream of mine to see different countries so being a French Education major is quite fitting for what I would like to do in the future. If I were not able to teach abroad but had to still pick a location to work I would probably choose to live in a small town or suburban area when I got a bit older but while I am young I am fine with life in the big city as well.
Intended Major Requirements
The requirements for my major include taking french classes up to the 400 level. Mixed in with this will be classes having to do with teaching as my major is French Education. Student teaching as well as studying abroad will also be required as well.
Major and Career goals
The current major that I am currently pursuing is a bachelor in French Education with a minor in Japanese studies. Since high school I have been very fond of learning languages and decided after my freshman year of college that I would like to teach others how to teach languages while also learning languages as well. When it comes to skills I can be very good at explaining things that people would normally not understand in a creative way. Whether it be how to do something on a computer or how to complete an assignment, I tend to be pretty good at explaining things to others. I believe these skills will be able to help me in my future career because using methods I have learned throughout my college career and some ideas of my own I believe that it will really help me to be able to better teach the students I will be involved with in the future. As for weaknesses I would put that sometimes I may say things in a way that people may misunderstand them and get the wrong idea, also if I don’t have a pre-planned method for dealing with a problem I can sometimes struggle with trying to come up with a method to figuring out that problem. Once I complete my required classes for my major and minor I think I will have learned more information and ways to come up with different strategies to handle different situations. This will allow me to tackle a wider variety of problems that may come up in the course of my career.
Passion or Success?
This is a question that everyone asks themselves at least once in their lives. Should I study something I love or should I go where the money is? Follow the wishes of my parents or decide on my own path? It can be very confusing to think about. For me passion is definitely the only option. If there is one thing I can’t stand is doing things I don’t want to do. Sure maybe a higher paying job would bring me more money but doing my passion allows me to do what I want and I love doing what I want. Money isn’t really an issue, you can always save right?
