Reflection on major and career representations:

How does your intended major connect with your skill set and career goals?

My intended major is physician assistant. I haven’t yet gained experience in the medical field because becoming a P.A. is a new goal for me. However, I have looked into the career a little deeper and learned more about the path I would have to take to become a P.A. I’ve mapped out a general sketched plan of what I need to do in order to achieve a goal as such, and I believe it is a realistic and obtainable one if done the correct way.

When I receive the proper training needed for anything I can excel. I’m joining the United States Air Force in the summer of 2015 and beginning my journey there by entering the field of diagnostic imaging. Here I will be able to get my foot into the door of a medical setting, and my technical training will provided me with a basic knowledge of the human body and things I will be required to know while in a P.A. degree program.

Being a P.A. requires good people and communication skills and I love to interact with others; it’s what keeps me going and motivated. I also love the idea of being able to help others live a healthier life.

Write a job description for your “ideal position” or your “dream career”.

I have been bouncing back and fourth with ideas of what I would be interested in having as my career in the past three years. However, one idea has maintained consistent, and that’s the thought of joining the United States Air Force. Although I’m not entirely sure of what I want to do yet, I have an idea of the type of job I do not want, and that has given me somewhat of an idea of where I may lean in the near future. I never had the desire to want to work in an a large office setting with cubicles; having to work hard and go to school only to get a job where you are stressed and buried to your neck in paper work is not my idea of achieving something better in life . Also, I wouldn’t like a routine setting. I’m an active and hands on person who likes interaction the those around me. Being in a friendly working environment with new adventures each day is something that is important to me. I’ve also learned that being truly interested and focused in your studies is extremely important in your overall performance in school. if you are uninterested in what you study, then it would be hard to maintain good or excellent academic standing.

I’ve looked into the job of a physician assistant, and it’s a tough decision to call, but I think after focusing and getting through school, it would be a worth while job that both pays well and fulfills my interest requirements. Once I become well trained and comfortable in my field, I can easily gain a more than comfortable life making up to $85-95,000 a year; and with the advantage of having military experience underneath my belt, I would have the confidence to travel anywhere and make a living in a new environment with a new life.

Is it better to pursue what you love or what you think will make you money?

The big debate on this subject is money, and will you have enough or more of it. I believe it is better to pursue what you love, if not, then a person should find a happy medium. The majority of one’s life is spent working, so why do something that you don’t like even it it does supply you with good money? Waking up everyday knowing that you love what you do is like a breath of fresh air, however if you dread what you do, that, in my opinion, is a waste of a life. I believe it is harder to pursue something that you have no interest in. There would be a lack of motivation and passion for what you do. If you are passionate for what you do, you will be more driven and motivated to advance in your career not because you have to, but because you want to. Having these kinds of positive attitudes toward your job can can cause many different greater opportunities. You are likely to move up on the promotion ladder more often, and you would be more likely to receive raises or other bonuses because when you’re passionate about your work, it will show. Also doing what you don not love can cause you to struggle even if you are good at it. You may not put in extra time outside from work or school to put in that extra mile to better yourself or your work or even follow up on certain things such as remembering important dates, deadlines, and so on. So even if the job someone really love doesn’t supply them with the most money, I believe someone would be much more happy with life once they are actually in a field of interest.
