South Africa: School Garden

Submitted by Lejan Castro on the 2018 winter session program in South Africa sponsored by the Department of Human Development and Family Studies…

These past few days we have been going to a local primary school here in Cape Town. At the primary school, they set up a garden that the school uses to provide food for the children that cannot afford it. The garden grows various fruits, vegetables and herbs, like lemons, cabbage tomatoes and mint. Currently, the school garden feeds up to 600 out of the 1000+ children at the primary school. The principle explained to us that the meal the school provides is sometimes the only food the child will eat throughout the day, which is why the school believes this garden is able to contribute so much. The garden is also a way of educating the children about agriculture, healthy eating, as well as providing a space for students and staff to relax.
