South Africa: Blyde Canyon

Submitted by Tatiana Thomas on the 2018 winter session program in South Africa sponsored by the Department of Human Development and Family Studies…

We hiked in Blyde Canyon today! This hike was a big test of our teamwork. The terrain was much more difficult than I expected, but there wasn’t a moment in the hike that I was ever alone. Every time there was a difficult path, someone was always there to help me across. Then I stopped and helped the person behind me to keep the “chain of help” going. Our group really has a great bond and I’m happy that they are here with me. I learned a lot about the canyon. It is the third largest canyon in the world. Blyde was named “the river of joy” because a hiking group was thought to be lost, but eventually they were found so they named the river after the joy they felt to see the group alive.
