Cheers to London

Submitted by Elizabeth Roche on the 2014 summer session program in London, England sponsored by the Department of Art…

After a seven hour red-eye, we arrived at Heathrow airport. As tired as I was on the bus to our flats, I could not help but stare out the window out of excitement and curiosity. I have never been to Europe before and I felt consumed by the beautiful architecture. As we pulled up to our flats, I was surprised by how modern the building was. Inside everything was white and black with a touch of neon. I am excited to unpack and experience my first day in this new city.

The London Underground puts New York’s subway system to shame. Navigating the tube was much easier than I anticipated. With the help of some nice Brits we found our way to the Art Workers Guild. I love the homey and welcoming feel of this building. Peter Saville spoke to us here today. His modesty and brutal honesty about his work and life attracted me. Peter began by saying “I just started to feel happy about where I am and what I have done.” Despite his immeasurable impact on design, Peter just recently began to consider himself an artist at age 59. “I grew through graphic design” he says. I will take it to heart when Peter says get any single job you can get.
