Programs for Government and Professional Officials

The English Language Institute has offered targeted English language training programs for professionals from a variety of fields all over the world. These include law and legal English, business, aeronautics, and English as a Foreign Language teacher training, among others.

Programs vary in duration and can include:

  • a language curriculum with a focus on English for Specific Purposes, (e.g. business, health, hotel and restaurant management, aeronautics, energy) as designated by the sponsor;
  • an integrated professional and cultural program of activities, trips and contact with Americans, as well as a social and cultural orientation to American society and life;
  • part-time University of Delaware credit-course work in select disciplines (e.g., Business, Education, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Energy Management, etc.) leading to a certificate.

Programs include housing and dining options for students, as well as a University ID card, which permits the students to use the University’s Morris library, sports facilities, and attend cultural events.

Program instructors are trained University of Delaware faculty experienced with a variety of effective instructional approaches and formats (class instruction, individual or group tutoring and laboratory practice) as well as special computer applications. Pre-program and post-program language achievement testing, as well as a post-program evaluation are conducted and results are included in the final report sent to the sponsor. Each program has a designated Program Coordinator who addresses participant concerns and who reports directly the ELI Director.

Over the years ELI’s specialized programs have received very high praise from participants, their counselors, and sponsors.

Please contact the ELI for more information. The ELI is eager to work with you to design a program to meet the specific needs of your students.
