This course meets five hours each week of each session. Most frequently we meet for five weeks/ten classes (click here to see the ELI General Calendar). The course develops students’ test taking skills for the IELTS examination.
Course objectives include:
- Familiarizing the students with the format and directions of the test;
- Familiarizing and practicing with the types of questions that are asked in each section;
- Developing the English language skills that are necessary to be successful on the test.
Emphasis is placed on reading and the tested reading tasks, listening comprehension, addressing the speaking prompts, and special emphasis is placed on appropriately responding to the IELTS writing task 1 – a data commentary. The objectives are addressed through exercises that are designed to develop specific areas of English and test taking skills, as well as through practice IELTS tests.
Please note that this course alone does not satisfy the requirements for meeting the minimum hours of study required on a student visa. Most students in the IELTS preparation course are also enrolled in the Intensive English Program and meet the requirements necessary to obtain a student visa.
The IELTS exam is offered in nearby Philadelphia and Baltimore. Click here to learn more about taking the IELTS exam at the University of Delaware ELI.
The ELI does not offer TOEFL Preparation Courses. However, the ELI and the University of Delaware provide on site location for both TOEFL pBT and TOEFL iBT. Click here to learn about how to register for the TOEFL.
