American Host Program – Questions and Answers
What is a host family?
Most families are Americans who have volunteered to spend time with students while here at ELI. Many of our families are couples who are older, or retired, though we do have some singles and families with young children or with teenagers. They will usually invite the student(s) over to dinner, include the student(s) in an activity that they are involved in such as church or family gatherings, or a visit to an interesting place.
Does the program have a cost?
No. This is a volunteer program: therefore, no fee is requested.
Do I need my own transportation?
No. The host family will provide transportation to and from their homes and scheduled activities. If you live within walking distance, you may offer to walk there yourself.
What if my English is not so good?
Remember you are here to learn and practice English speaking skills. Most host families are very patient and kind and will make the effort to understand you and be sure that you understand them. The important thing to remember is don’t be shy. If you are too embarrassed, sign-up at the beginning of next session.
How often will they want to spend time with me?
The host family is encouraged to spend time with their student at least 2 times during each session. Some host families offer more; others stick to the requirement.
What will the host family expect of me?
The most important thing that you can do as a participant is to communicate. Also it is important to make the time for the host family that is assigned to you. Otherwise they might get discouraged and stop trying to contact you.
What if I don’t hear from my host family?
Please contact Karen Hale or Stephanie Dunham (info@eliahp.com) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and let them know you have not heard from your host family. They will make an effort to contact the assigned host family. If they are not able to contact them, you may be reassigned.
Does it matter where I live when I am in the United States?
Yes. If you are living in a homestay with an American family, then you are getting enough contact with Americans. If you live on your own (e.g. apartment or dorm room), then you are eligible for the program.
How do I apply?
You can apply online, or pick up an application at the ELI office, or fill one out at orientation.
