ESL Faculty Positions

The University of Delaware English Language Institute (ELI), an academic unit in the College of Sciences, invites applications from outstanding ESL professionals to fill three full time continuing academic faculty positions, effective July 1, 2013.  The ELI is well respected among IEPs, in large part because it attracts talented and creative faculty members who are committed to supporting students in meeting their linguistic and cross-cultural goals and to pursuing excellence in their teaching, scholarship, and service.  We retain such faculty by offering excellent opportunities for professional growth and advancement, competitive salaries, a rich benefit package, access to extensive University resources, and a supportive and collaborative work environment (see www.udel.edu/eli/professionalgrowth for more information).  The ELI offers a wide variety of courses and programs, including: EAP, Business English, English for Professionals, English Through American Culture, Legal English, EFL Teacher Training, ITA training, and instruction for English Language Learners in the public schools.   One of the hallmarks of the ELI is its Tutoring Center, which provides free private tutoring to support classroom instruction.   More information about the ELI is available at www.udel.edu/eli.

Full-time faculty members typically teach two courses per session and serve on institute, college, and university committees. Faculty are also encouraged to participate in research and professional presentations, for which a managed workload may be negotiated. Opportunities for program coordination are also available.

Qualifications.  Applicants must meet the educational requirements set by the Consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP) for core IEP faculty, i.e., have a master’s degree in either Teaching English as a Second Language or Applied Linguistics with coursework in the following areas: culture and society, second language acquisition, second-language/TESL pedagogy, second-language assessment, and language teaching practicum.

  • excellence in teaching multiple levels and skill areas.

In brief, the Institute is seeking three exceptional ESL professionals who can contribute to further strengthening the program’s reputation as a leader in teaching, service, and scholarship.
