ESL Faculty Positions
The University of Delaware English Language Institute (ELI), an academic unit in the College of Sciences, invites applications from outstanding ESL professionals to fill three full time continuing academic faculty positions, effective July 1, 2013. The ELI is well respected among IEPs, in large part because it attracts talented and creative faculty members who are committed to supporting students in meeting their linguistic and cross-cultural goals and to pursuing excellence in their teaching, scholarship, and service. The ELI offers a wide variety of courses and programs, including: EAP, Business English, English for Professionals, English Through American Culture, Legal English, EFL Teacher Training, ITA training, and instruction for English Language Learners in the public schools. One of the hallmarks of the ELI is its Tutoring Center, which provides free private tutoring to support classroom instruction. More information about the ELI is available at www.udel.edu/eli.
Full-time faculty members typically teach two courses per session and serve on institute, college, and university committees. Faculty are also encouraged to participate in research and professional presentations, for which a managed workload may be negotiated. Opportunities for program coordination are also available.
Qualifications. Applicants must meet the educational requirements set by the Consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP) for core IEP faculty, i.e., have a master’s degree in either Teaching English as a Second Language or Applied Linguistics with coursework in the following areas: culture and society, second language acquisition, second-language/TESL pedagogy, second-language assessment, and language teaching practicum.
Candidates must have the following:
- a minimum of three years of post-master’s classroom experience in an IEP
- evidence of significant professional activity and accomplishments
- strong written and oral communication skills
- excellence in teaching multiple levels and skill areas.
In brief, the Institute is seeking three exceptional ESL professionals who can contribute to further strengthening the program’s reputation as a leader in teaching, service, and scholarship.
Specializations. To meet current and future ELI instructional and programmatic needs, candidates must demonstrate substantial expertise in at least one of the following areas of specialization:
- English for Academic Purposes
- Business ESL
- Beginner/Intermediate Levels, with a strong background in teaching reading and literacy
Applicants should use their cover letter to highlight areas of their curriculum vitae that demonstrate requisite areas of expertise.
Submission and Review Process. The search is being conducted by a committee comprised of three faculty members. Applicants should submit, electronically, a cover letter, references, curriculum vitae, one sample lesson plan (maximum 3 pages) and a one-page summary of evaluations/observations of your teaching by colleagues or supervisors ( for the last three years) by (December 1).
Qualified Candidates. Those candidates that qualify will be contacted by (January 31) to submit a brief packet of information consisting of the following items:
- data from recent IEP course evaluations
- written observations of your teaching by colleagues or supervisors
- two sample lesson plans
- descriptions or syllabi of one or two courses you designed or developed
