University of Delaware

Family and friends of Heather Heyer

To the Campus Community,

The University of Delaware extends its sympathies to the families and friends of Heather Heyer, Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates, who lost their lives in connection with the tragic events in Charlottesville, Va., last weekend. We stand with the University of Virginia and the people of Charlottesville as they begin to heal and seek a common path forward.

The University unequivocally condemns and rejects the violence, ignorance, prejudice and hatred that spawned these events. The abhorrent and disgraceful beliefs and behaviors demonstrated by neo-Nazis, Klan members and other white supremacists last weekend have no place at this University or in civil society.

As we look forward to the beginning of a new academic year, we also recommit ourselves to upholding our essential values of diversity, inclusion, equality and understanding.

Sincerely,

President Dennis Assanis

Provost Domenico Grasso

Vice Provost for Diversity Carol Henderson
