The UD-NSLIY in China program successfully kicked off in Hilton Newark Airport Hotel on June 30, 2012. Thirty students from fifteen different states joined the Pre-Departure Orientation.
It is the 6th NSLIY in China program that the University of Delaware implements. Dr. Jianguo Chen, director of the program, shared program rules and regulations, schedules for Chinese language and cultural classes and activities, homestay information, insights for coping with cultural shock, health, safety and security, and many other aspects. Dr. Chen also shared pictures from past programs and introduction to Shanghai, the East China Normal University, the hosting university, as well as two cities Suzhou and Beijing that students will be visiting during the program.
Students were randomly divided into five teams with six in each group. Students will compete in teams in six different aspects, including behavior/self discipline, creativity, academic, language immersion, excursion and leadership, throughout the six weeks in China. Performances will be evaluated on a weekly basis for prizes and a grand prize at the end of the program for the winning team. The purpose of this activity is to promote team work and team spirit as well as facilitate the communication and collaboration within groups and between students and chaperons/assistants/faculty members.
Therefore, go and Strive for Excellence, the Avengers, Fruit Ninjas, YoLo Dumplings, Riders of Rohan and Swaggin’ Dragons!
