The university is switching out ALL current “copper line” phones and replacing them with VOIP phones.

What is VoIP?

VoIP is the acronym for Voice over Internet Protocol. Phone calls will be transmitted over the data network with our computing data traffic, eliminating the need to maintain a separate voice network.

You may have seen the news of UD’s mirapoint server aka mail.udel.edu having some major issues.  http://www.udel.edu/udaily/2013/apr/webmail041513.html .

In the college we have relatively few users still on mail.udel.edu, but for those few users we HIGHLY recommend getting off of that system asap.  We will either move you to Google Apps, or the AG College Exchange Server, the choice is yours.

If you know you are on Mirapoint (you use http://mail.udel.edu to check your email)  Please fill out a ticket as soon as possible to get your e-mail off of that system.

Some of you have probably heard of the Java compromises that affected Facebook and Apple recently.  We’ve been pushing out a series of patches to protect against this to our windows machines.  These updates also disable java in the browser which is the recommended best practice to mitigate these issues. See our previous blog post about re-enabling it, and remember to disable it when you’re done using it.  If you want more information about what the issue is check here http://krebsonsecurity.com/2013/01/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-java-exploit/.  I would also recommend checking http://browsercheck.qualsys.com to see if your browser is secure.  Please note we do not do patch management on Macs, so please visit that site to find/apply your patches.

We also published a series of Adobe security updates for Flash,Reader and Acrobat.

I’ve noticed a lot of our users use Evernote.  If you do you probably got a notice from Evernote that they were compromised.  I just wanted to let you know that notice is legitimate.  Please reset your password as they requested.  http://blog.evernote.com/blog/2013/03/02/security-notice-service-wide-password-reset/

Hi all iPhone, iPad users,
Just wanted to alert you all the a bug on iOS 6.1 devices. For the most part everyone on our exchange is running iOS 6.1.

“When you respond to an exception to a recurring calendar event with a Microsoft Exchange account on a device running iOS 6.1, the device may begin to generate excessive communication with Microsoft Exchange Server. You may notice increased network activity or reduced battery life on the iOS device.” Full Article
Unfortunately the workaround for us is to block or severely throttle you.  So be careful with managing your calendar from your device, or better yet, don’t manage your calendar from it at all.
We will let you know when Apple releases a patch.

We’re pushing out a new series of java updates, which should push the version to 7 update 13.  If you’re not using Java please consider removing it from your system.  Also if you have java 6 on your machine please consider removing that as it will go off support beginning February 13th.  If you need to use java in your browser please see the previous post on enabling it, then remember to disable it when you’re done.

Java Updates

We’ve been pushing out java updates this week to address the issues from http://1.usa.gov/XSQK29 as recommended by the Department of Homeland security our installation will leave java disabled in the browser http://cnet.co/13x03Fd.  If you need to use java on a website, like webex, gotomeeting, etc… you will need to re-enable java in the browser. I recently met with Hannah Lee and Nico Carver of the University of Delaware Library’s Student Multimedia Design Center to brainstorm ideas for multimedia support and services for our faculty and staff.  As such, I have this list of resources and opportunities to share with you regarding some upcoming events.

Please note that after the holiday break, faculty and staff will receive a request to complete a survey about multimedia needs. We encourage you to respond so that we may explore customized training options for our faculty and staff, both in the Departments and in Extension.

Winter Faculty Institute

The winter faculty institute, held each January by UD Information Technologies-Academic Technology Services, helps faculty and those who teach at UD (i.e. our Extension professionals) improve teaching and learning through the application of technology.  An invited speaker comes from off campus to introduce the current year’s theme.  This year, Robert Steiner of the American Museum of Natural History, will give a keynote on “Institutions in Transition: Research, Teaching, and Learning in the Digital Age.” This year the institute will be held on January 22 at the Courtyard Marriott; it is also offered as a webcast.  Registration is open on the website. Past institutes have covered such topics as videoconferencing, clicker use, ePortfolios, iPads in the classroom, using movies in classroom teaching, and more.

Winter Faculty Institute: Digital Storytelling Workshop

Limited space is available for individuals wishing to extend their winter faculty institute to January 23, to participate in a digital storytelling workshop.  This workshop will cover the full gamut of video production from start to finish and will be held at the UD Library’s Student Multimedia Design Center.  Visit the Winter Faculty Institute page for more information.  Registration for the Digital Storytelling workshop is on the same form as the Winter Faculty Institute.

VTC.com

Through University of Delaware Information Technologies, students, faculty, and staff have access to VTC.com‘s extensive online training library, which contains over 98,000 video tutorials in over 1000 online courses covering software programs in subjects like 3D, audio, video, photography, graphic design, web and interactive design, business, and development. You can request a user name and password to the VTC library by contacting Information Technologies.

UD Library’s Multimedia Literacy online guide

This online guide is a resource that gives step by step instruction for producing videos and multimedia pieces.  Designed by Hannah Lee and Nico Carver, it incorporates the equipment and technology available at UD.

Workshops offered by UD SMDC

The SMDC has not yet finalized their list of spring workshops; however these workshops are open to students, faculty and staff at no charge.  Workshop topics will likely include: an intro to the SMDC; understanding your digital camera; iMovie essentials; Adobe Photoshop; Final Cut Pro; video production; digitizing old formats (audio, video, photos); and more. We will share this information as it becomes available to us.

During this holiday season, please be extra cautious about email and phone scams.  Most recently, several CANR faculty and staff reported getting text messages with the message, “(name) said to send this to you” and included a link.  DO NOT click on a link from an unknown number!  This particular message contained links to pornographic web sites and may contain viruses.

Central IT posted this great article: “Happy Holidays: Don’t get scammed!” Or check out the Phishing Scams Seen at UD blog with other scams/spam tips.
