Ideal Job

With what i want to study there are many jobs that i could acquire after i graduate. However i am not entirely sure what i want my job to be. I know i would like it to be related to what my major is, which is landscape horticulture and design, but as for what specifically i want to do with that i have no idea. Mostly i want to just design landscapes and plan them out. Though would i want to do it for a company or start my own business for that is what i am not sure about. Being with a landscape business would be  a good job however it may not provide the freedom that i could get with starting my own business. I would mostly like a job where i can work at my own pace and not have many restrictions on what i can do. Perhaps working in a landscaping business would restrict me or maybe it might be exactly what i would want. For the most part i guess i would just have to try both out at some point and see which i prefer. Overall i want a job that i am interested in and would not get bored with after a while. I do not plan on being a landscape designer all my career life but after that who knows i could try to teach it to others or i might find a completely different job. So long as i am interested and can work how i want to any jib like that is good for me. I do not want to waste my college years on a job that is completely unrelated to what i studied so a job in this field for now is my perfect and ideal job. This job combines my interest in the environment with my like to draw so that is a bonus to this job as well.

Career Goals

For my intended career i want to do something with landscape design. I am currently about to start my major of landscape horticulture. Once i get that done then i can start to focus on the design aspect. I want to eventually get into the Longwood Gardens program that is offered through the University of Delaware. Once i complete certain requirements then i hope that i can successfully get into that program. With the Longwood Gardens program it would set me up for my future career. This gives me the skills i would need to be a landscape designer. Initially i might decide to work at Longwood Gardens itself but eventually i might branch out. Maybe after some time i would travel the world and learn about foreign landscapes and learn about designing them. I wouldnt mind starting my own landscape business either. Regardless though the Longwood Gardens program is what will help me start towards my future career. I may decide after sometime that id rather not be a landscape designer and could end up switching to something different however i still will have all the skills from my major to fall back on. It will take some time to get through my major and get to where i want to be with it but i know it will be worth it. I would really love to travel around and see landscapes from different areas of the world but i am not sure if that will be a possibility yet so that will be a long term goal. For now my short term goals are just to make it through my major and finish school so that way i can get the proper education in what i want to pursue as a career. Long term goals are good but they can change easily so for right now i will mostly focus on the short term goals i have set.

Skills and Careers

When looking at my interests and skill sets from the career services sheet I noticed that a lot of them were relatively suited towards my major. The major i want is Landscape Horticulture and Design, which unfortunately is a restricted major. But for this major i would most likely need good organizational skills, be good with hands on projects, enjoy working outdoors and other various skills. Well according to my analysis from the strong interest inventory I already posses those skills and more. Some skills i had i wouldn’t think this major or job would need but upon thinking about it they would actually help. Now even though I know that I am not going to change my mind about my major seeing those other skills, interests, and other job suggestions was pretty interesting. A few of the other jobs were ones I had thought about and others just seemed like something I could see myself doing. However there where a few that i could not believe showed up. Getting to see the information about me laid out like that honestly helped to see what potential jobs would suit me best. For people who can not decide what they want to do for their future should probably look into this useful tool. It could provide them with information about themselves and even pair them with jobs that they would have never thought of by themselves. This could definitely make planning a future a whole lot easier. For me however it was not really helpful as much as it was just interesting to see. As stated I have already picked my major and the career I want to go into. My skills are already similar to my major so that just helps to reinforce my mind in that this is the major for me. Hopefully I will be right.

Why so Serious?

A lot of people are conflicted when it comes to school and their future. Most people have no idea what to study or what they want to do as a future career. However once you figure that out you are left with an even bigger question: Do i want to study what i like or study something that will get me a good paying job? This question is a very important one that can alter and affect your whole college career. While yes it is good to want a good paying job and to want to have money because everything in this world requires money but does this mean that you put yourself in a position where you might not like what you are studying? If you study a topic you like it is more interesting for you and you will enjoy it more. Being stuck in a job you do not like will only make you miserable, yes it may pay good but whats the point if you can not stand it? Wouldn’t it be better to study and get a job in a field that you like and enjoy? It may not pay as well as some other fields but you may end up happier in the long run. Some people are able to find a balance those between those, they find a topic they like and that pays good and that is good for them. Most people do not get that luxury. I personally think it is better to be in a field that you enjoy. You will have more fun, have a more fulfilling life. Yes money might be important but so is happiness. Besides no one says you have to stick with one job your whole life so maybe you go into it for the money first but if you become unhappy then change. You make the decisions it is your choice on what you study and what you want from yourself in the future but let me ask you this why make yourself unhappy?
